SEMBIOSIS: A Multidimensional Investigation of Ecology (2021)

Project:

MA Graphic Media Design
Final Major Project
Boardgame

Focussed on AI narratives, SEMBIOSIS recognises the narrow binary dystopic/utopic nature of these narratives and adopts symbiosis as a critique to diversify them. By analysing narratives located within popular press, a database of symbiotic terms are categorised under four types of symbiotic behavioural dynamic relationships:

mutualism (collaborators)
parasitism (parasites)

predation (predators)
competition (competitors)

By creating a database of symbiotic terms and defamiliarising them using anagrams, SEMBIOSIS aims to empower the public to engage with these narratives while gaining access to tools needed to challenge their assumed inevitability. SEMBIOSIS uses the methodology of defamiliarising language using anagrams to adopt a game strategy and spark collaborations between participants. As participants work together to retrieve the symbiotic terms hidden within the anagrams, they follow by sparking discussions and debates surrounding the nature of the symbiotic behaviour, whilst referring to the symbiotic gradient in front of them. This symbiotic grid acts as the board within the game while using a gradient to recognise the nuances of interspecies relationships.
